Asian Cosmetic Surgery

By Tracey Charleston

Cosmetic Surgery for Asians has shown a steady trend of increasing popularity in the Australian Asian community. An increase in affordability and a swing towards a more accepting attitude to cosmetic surgery has seen many Asian cosmetic surgery procedures become common place. Suffering for beauty has been a trend in many Asian cultures for centuries with practices such as neck rings and foot binding common place in the past. The most common cosmetic procedure for Asians is double eyelid surgery which creates a fold in the eyelid when one isn't naturally present. Other procedures such as botox, breast enlargements and rhinoplasty are also seeing a surge in popularity.

Cosmetic surgeons specialising in Asian cosmetic surgery are performing over 100 double eyelid surgeries a year and in some countries such as Japan and Korea, the procedure has become almost as common as mole removal. The double eyelid surgery creates a double fold in the eyelid and opens the eye, giving it a more rounded look. Although this procedure is more popular amongst women, men are also requesting the surgery in growing numbers. The procedure can be done in three different ways depending on the original shape of the eye, the amount of skin and fat needing to be removed and the desired outcome. All methods can be done under local or general anaesthetic and the down time is minimal with only a small amount of localised swelling and occasional bruising.

Although the most popular procedures for cosmetic surgery for Asians could arguably be seen as striving towards a westernised ideal of true beauty, this opinion is strongly denied within the Asian community. A leading Australian Asian cosmetic surgeon is quoted as saying ".... when a Caucasian person requests a nose job to reduce the size of their nose, are they accused of trying to become Asianised?". He also claims that his clients have never produced photos of western women/men when they are trying to convey the finished look they desire.

No matter what is the driving factor for Asians to have cosmetic surgery performed, it seems that more and more Asians are being influenced by it and are flocking to have surgery. There are a growing number of specialists in the field of cosmetic surgery for Asians popping up throughout the nation with most of them coming from an Asian background, this allows them to have a better understanding of the wants and desires of their patients.

Along with double eyelid surgery, other popular cosmetic procedures for Asians include:

* Brow lift surgery, which aims to lift the brow and improve its shape.

* Rhinoplasty - improves the bridge shape and nostril and/or tip size.

* Breast augmentation - to increase the size of breasts.

* Botox and Fillers - face slimming and wrinkle reduction.

* Laser Skin Whitening - to produce tighter, whiter, clearer, brighter skin.

With the introduction of new less invasive procedures and the decline in the cost of equipment such as cosmetic laser machinery, the cost and availability of Asian cosmetic surgery within Australia should continue to become more accessible to the average Asian, and see a continuation in the growth of the field of specialty Asian cosmetic surgeons.
